SECRET BABY SMILE
When I get to feeling like nothing is going my way,
I want to scream and holler and chase the demons away.
I feel so futile when everything seems,
to drag me down, turn me around,
to dizzy to get back to my feet.
Then my little baby smiles,
a secret baby smile!
As if to say, Hey Mom, you're okay!
Then things get back on track,
and everything is fine.
Then that little baby smiles,
her secret baby smile.
As if to say,
Now you're feeling better,
it's my turn to whine!
Someday when my child is old enough to understand the logic, that motivates a mother I will tell her:
"I loved you enough", to ask you about where you were going, with whom, and what time you would be home.
"I loved you enough", to insist that you buy a bike that I could afford to give you with your own money.
"I loved you enough", to keep quiet and let you discover your hand picked friend was a creep.
"I loved you enough", to admit I was wrong and ask for your forgiveness.
"I loved you enough", to let you stumble, fall, and hurt.
"I loved you enough", to make you return a Milky Way with a bite out of it, to a drug store to confess, "I STOLE IT!"
"I loved you enough", to let you assume responsibilities for your actions at 6, 10 and 16 years.
But most of all "I loved you enough", to say "No" when you hated me for it - that was the hardest part of all.
