Hemifacial Microsomia Defined

By Kara -- adult born with Hemifacial Microsomia

Hemifacial Microsomia is HEMI=half FACIAL=face MICROSOMIA=smallness. Basically, during fetal development 1/2 of the face, or hemisphere of the skull does not form, or form as quickly as the other half. Quite often it is related to Goldenhar syndrome which also entails fusion of vertebra and scoliosis and kidney problems, and pigeon feet.

In my case, I was born with the left side of my face affected. During fetal stage, your ears begin almost attached to your mouth. As you grow they move backward to the proper position, creating your jaws, cheeks, etc. My right side moved, the left didn't. Thus I was missing a left cheek muscle, left lower jaw bone, and left outer ear. (I had the tab at the corner of my mouth).
