Ryan Howard

Ryan was born on May 18, 2000 with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. His cleft was a complete surprise to us, but we are handling it. He will have his first surgery (lip repair/ear tubes) on July 27, 2000. Ryan's pictures are presented to you by his parents, Rick & Kali.

Mom and Dad awaiting Ryan's arrival (with their cool hats on!).

Ryan's first smile. Isn't he adorable?

A note from Ryan's mom, Kali...

When Ryan arrived we didn't know about the cleft (I didn't know what a cleft was). The Dr said out loud "We have a cleft..." It was hard and I wanted to breastfeed but he had a complete Bilateral cleft lip and palate and couldn't suck. Everything else was working great; he even tried to pee on the nurse right away :-) lol. So that 1st day we tried all different nipples and bottles we were getting about 30cc in him and thinking that was good. He was 7 lbs at birth and 6lb 9 oz when we went home. Before we left the hospital they had our appointment ready for us to meet our team at Children's Hospital. They are great!!! The nurse there gave us another bottle to use -- the Mead Johnson with the orthodontic nipple (that we cut larger) and a time line. Let me just say that once he started eating he was in heaven. I did try the pumping and feeding but my milk supply went down very quick, so we went to formula at about 2 weeks old.

We just had our 2 month visit with the pediatrician. Ryan got his shots and weighed in at 10-1/2 lbs., and 23 inches long. Big boy :) Now in a week we will start the process of lip surgery the lip and tubes in his ears. I am a nervous wreck...

July 27, lip repair. Ryan is 2 months.

This is right out of surgery, we had just been put into a room. Ryan was a sleepy boy that whole day...

Here is Ryan and dad the night we came home from the hospital. I think he just really wanted those arm restraints off.

Another picture of Ryan just a day after surgery.
